There will always be people who have their own ideas of what we should be doing with our lives. Not to take away anything from godly counsel or advise from trusted friends but The Holy Spirit is the ultimate one we should rely on for our guidance.
Mark 14: 6-9 (MSG)
3-5 Jesus was at Bethany, a guest of Simon the Leper. While he was eating dinner, a woman came up carrying a bottle of very expensive perfume. Opening the bottle, she poured it on his head. Some of the guests became furious among themselves. “That’s criminal! A sheer waste! This perfume could have been sold for well over a year’s wages and handed out to the poor.” They swelled up in anger, nearly bursting with indignation over her.
6-9 But Jesus said, “Let her alone. Why are you giving her a hard time? She has just done something wonderfully significant for me. You will have the poor with you every day for the rest of your lives. Whenever you feel like it, you can do something for them. Not so with me. She did what she could when she could—she pre-anointed my body for burial. And you can be sure that wherever in the whole world the Message is preached, what she just did is going to be talked about admiringly.”
We can see the crowd getting upset that this woman had taken a bottle of expensive perfume and poured it on Jesus. They had their own ideas of what should have been done. They may have been upset because they did not understand nor have the faith to exhibit the boldness she had in approaching Jesus in such a way.
What we hear Jesus say to them is leave her alone. She did something wonderful for me. She did what she could when she could—she pre-anointed my body for burial.
I love that phrase she did what she could when she could. Jesus is telling us all the same thing today, do what we can when we can.
There is something available for each one of us to perform. It will take faith and boldness and we will have to be prepared for some not to like or agree with it. We have The Word of God and The Holy Spirit inside of us to give us our direction on what that something is and when to perform it.
God always has something for us to do we just have to look around, pray, read His Word and follow His leading. Every day we are taking part in the scripting of our lives. This story is still being told today and is over two thousand years old. What will our story tell about us two thousand years from now? We can decide that today and every day by doing what we can when we can for Jesus!
