Don’t try to out-god God.

There is an old saying “to many chiefs and not enough Indians”. In the natural we all want to be in chief but God needs Indians.

Act 15:10-11 MSG

10-11 “So why are you now trying to out-god God, loading these new believers down with rules that crushed our ancestors and crushed us, too? Don’t we believe that we are saved because the Master Jesus amazingly and out of sheer generosity moved to save us just as he did those from beyond our nation? So what are we arguing about?”

There was confusion among new believers in Antioch. Paul and Barnabas had been preaching there when some Jewish believers came from Jerusalem. They were telling everyone that in order to be saved they needed to be circumcised. Paul and Barnabas got in a dispute with them and went to the elders at Jerusalem to settle the matter.
Once there Paul spoke to the group through The Spirit and told them there should be no burden thrown on the new believers that the Jews could not even bear themselves. They also stated that we all are saved because The Master Jesus, amazingly and out of pure generosity, moved to save us. He also asked why they now were trying to out-god God.

So many times this still goes on today. People eagerly want a relationship with God through Christ. They get saved and are so excited about their new-found peace and joy through The Spirit. However that excitement becomes quickly sequestered by rules or ways of behavior thrown at them by some organized religions of the day.

We must be careful to not burden down new believers with rules of man but allow God to work in them through His word. As new believers read Gods word, gather together with other believers, they will grow in His grace, wisdom, power and Love.

We can never out-god God. It is He who sent His Son to die for us and it is He alone who saves us. He is the Chief and we are His children. Let’s encourage one another and especially new believers to read Gods word, pray and fellowship. This will allow God’s Holy Spirit to guide them to reach their full potential in Christ!
